The poem “Ông Đồ” was written in 1936 and published in Tinh Hoa (Essence) magazine. In this work, author Vũ Đình Liên conveys a deep sense of sorrow and nostalgia for the fading traditions and people of the past. As Western education spread in Vietnam, Han studies and Chinese characters gradually declined, leaving a profound impact on Vietnamese cultural life.
The Calligrapher

Each year when peach blossoms bloom,
The old calligrapher reappears,
Setting ink and crimson paper
By the bustling street he stays near.
Many seek his brush for hire,
Praising his skilled, flowing hand:
“Like dragons soar and phoenix dance,
Each stroke glides, graceful and grand.”
But with each year, fewer come,
Where have all his patrons gone?
The crimson paper fades in sorrow,
Ink dries in its well, forlorn.
Still, the old man lingers there,
No passerby stops to see.
Golden leaves drift on his paper,
As misty rain falls silently.
This year, peach flowers bloom again,
Yet he is nowhere in sight.
Of those who lived in times long past,
Where now do their spirits reside?

Bài thơ Ông Đồ sáng tác năm 1936 và được đăng trên tạp chí “Tinh Hoa”. Tác giả Vũ Đình Liên đã viết bài thơ “Ông Đồ” nói lên nỗi ngậm ngùi, niềm day dứt về cảnh cũ, người xưa khi Tây học du nhập vào Việt Nam khiến Hán học và chữ Nho ngày càng suy vi trong đời sống văn hóa người Việt.

Mỗi năm hoa đào nở
Lại thấy ông đồ già
Bày mực Tàu, giấy đỏ
Bên phố đông người qua
Bao nhiêu người thuê viết
Tấm tắc ngợi khen tài:
“Hoa tay thảo những nét
Như phượng múa, rồng bay”
Nhưng mỗi năm mỗi vắng
Người thuê viết nay đâu?
Giấy đỏ buồn không thắm
Mực đọng trong nghiên sầu
Ông đồ vẫn ngồi đấy
Qua đường không ai hay
Lá vàng rơi trên giấy
Ngoài trời mưa bụi bay
Năm nay đào lại nở
Không thấy ông đồ xưa
Những người muôn năm cũ
Hồn ở đâu bây giờ?
